I started writing because:
As an avid reader, I was thirsty for more stories about 'us'. Classic pieces, such as, The Bluest Eye and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings were beautifully and colorfully written but there was something missing from the literary balance. After reading The Coldest Winter Ever, I was blown away by the fact that the story was taking place in my lifetime and I wanted to emulate that.
The first story I'd ever completed:
...was a screenplay called The Scene and it was about these girls who were trying to find their calling even though it was staring them in the face. It was true to life. It is on hold until my first novel Rabbit's Lucky Number has grown some serious legs...Usain Bolt legs...
My current project is:
Rabbit's Lucky Number. Back in the days of Lee jeans, Kangols and Eric B and Rakim; rope chains, door knockers and four finger rings, a young girl named Rabbit is raped by her cousin: HS basketball star, Hot Rod. Hot Rod goes on to become a famous basketball player and Rabbit goes on with her rocky and unstable life...until a teenage girl comes forward with rape allegations many years later.
The characters in my stories:
Are real and unreal. Real because they have tidbits of people I know, with exaggeration for entertainment purposes. Unreal, because they are audacious that way!
Every night before I go to sleep:
I say a prayer for peace, tranquility and for my Lotto numbers to play. I also make sure I have a notepad nearby. I’ve gotten up in the middle of the night with a great idea and gone back to sleep thinking I’d write it down in the morning. Up to now, I have no idea what those great thoughts were.
I started writing because:
I was working as a part-time window display assistant and as a FedEx delivery driver and at night my friends and I were thinking we would be party promoters. I was too tired. So I quit...or got fired (depends on who's asking!), started writing at my friend's suggestion and haven't stopped.
The most intriguing thing I've done in 2008:
...is participating in the SAYSO (Sexual Assault Yealy Speak Out) by reading an excerpt from Rabbit's Lucky Number, as it relates to violence against women and its after effects. I'm also in the process of getting Rabbit's Lucky Number integrated into counseling sessions in rape crisis centers across the New York City area.
What I like most about present day 'black' fiction:
...is the number of people that are now reading because of it.
What I dislike most about present day 'black' fiction:
...is the proliferation of copy cat authors, crack tales infinitum, the misuse of there, their, and they’re, and the forgotten middle.There is a large population that is neither poverty stricken nor excessively bourgeois that I feel is not represented.
I've continued writing because:
God blessed me with this talent and I love it.
